Information

The winter trailhead at Little Truckee Summit will be moved this week to the Independence temporary trailhead (about 1.2 miles west of Little Truckee Summit on the 07 road). Please remember to parallel park vehicles/trailers on the South side of the 07 road (Jackson Meadows road) after unloading snowmobiles. Leave the turn-around area (in front of the ROAD CLOSED sign) free of vehicles, trailers, and gear. Spring conditions- watch for running water and holes in the snow surface. Also watch for trees, branches, rocks, and other obstacles becoming exposed as the snow melts. From Jct C to the French Joe Mdw. 3/21/2008 Messages: Snow conditions coming out of the Sugarloaf Trailhead is spotty for about ¾ mile. Good coverage from the East Lion Springs road over the top of Portuguese Pass. Some sections of the routes on south facing slopes and in and around timber are melting significantly and may leave a ridge of snow down the middle of the route. 51 route just north of Scarlet Davis Cr to Burnt ridge required a lot of construction to reopen the snow drifts and slides. Burnt Ridge has still has snow with bare spots, it is shallow and may be gone in a week. It took seven hrs to groom 27 miles of trail one way. Due to high temps pushing snow to fill in bare spots is futile and just enhances the melting process. Please be careful when riding trails. Contact the nearest Forest Service office for road and trail conditions or to report safety hazards. Icy conditions exist under new snow. Be cautious, keep your speed down and have a safe weekend. 3-17 16 road to Jacks backbone, to Latour F.S. via lower Huckelberry rd, lower roads below F.S. out cutter road to 16. Temps ranged from 28-36 snow has a lot of moisture, trails are holding snow very well but have become rougher than normal by my standards, the sun has created alot of shallow "rollers". Staging are holds 18" with the upper system still holding 6-9'. Jacks Backbone has appeared to have stabalized with No further Avalanches occuring in the last 7 days!!! On 3-15 I had a trainee from the Inyo N.F. who did most all of the grooming in the Battle creek /Ashpan lower system and did an excellant job considering the warmer temps Good job!!! 3-18 the rest of the Ashpan Lower system will be done, Dogsled, dogsled cutter , upper Cutter road, (dogsled to grey back) and the lower ashpan butte road. Latour is 70% open with 35 miles groomed L-1 thru L-2 and all roads between these areas, Ashpan is 75% open with 40 miles groomed. As always ride safely, watch for hazards, be aware of rough areas in sun baked parts of the system, and enjoy the snow while it lasts!!!! Thanks Wes

3-14 4-8" of fresh snowtemps were in the low 20's. Worked 16 road to greyback, Red Mountain loop to the battle creek turnaround, back down Grey back to 16. 38 miles groomed A-1 thru A-9. Most trails are holding up extremly well , sun sloughing is occuring more predominately on the main 16 road along the eastern edges, I was able to fill some low spots but not all so this main road is not up to my normal standards, the sun is taking its toll. Snow was a very light powder and it was snowing lightly, grooming will continue 3-16 and throughout next week as temps appear to be more favorable. Latour will be groomed on 3-16 & 17 the lower Ashpan system will be finished on 3-16. As always please ride safely, ride "right", watch for others and for hazards as the warm weather may and will create them very quickly. Their is still plenty of good snow and riding so enjoy before Summer is here!! Thanks Wes

H and 61 route 3/13/2008 Messages: Snow conditions coming out of the Sugarloaf Trailhead is spotty for about ¾ mile. Good coverage from East Lion Springs road over the top of Portuguese Pass. Some sections of the routes on south facing slopes and in and around timber are melting significantly and may leave a ridge of snow down the middle of the route. About 3’ of snow at Dunlap Saddle (Jct H on the 51 route) Due to high temps pushing snow to fill in bare spots is futile and just enhances the melting process. Please be careful when riding trails. Contact the nearest Forest Service office for road and trail conditions or to report safety hazards. Icy conditions exist under new snow. Be cautious, keep your speed down and have a safe weekend.

Tamarack Springs 48 Road north will no longer be groomed. Hat Creek Ranger District Information Warmer temperatures during the past week have limited opportunities for grooming. Two weeks ago on March 1, 45 miles of the Ashpan system was groomed, with 90% open (A-1 through A-10). The Latour system was last groomed on March 3. These trails (including L-1 through L-2) are 75% open, with 40 miles groomed. Some new precipitation is predicted during the next few days, and if conditions allow, grooming will resume over the weekend. Although snow has been melting at lower elevations, 8-9 feet of snowpack remains in the high country around Battlecreek and Latour. Come enjoy our “spring” conditions! Note: Cell phone signals have been restored throughout the Ashpan helicopter medivac system. Communications should again be functioning at all 15 sites. Eagle Lake Ranger District Information This is the last week that the Eagle Lake Ranger District will be grooming the Swain Mountain and the Bogard Trail Systems. There is still plenty of snow to ride on, however, grant funding has expired. The week of March 17th the Fredonyer system will be groomed for the last time. Intersection signs will be pulled signs on all the trails as they are groomed. The Lassen National Forest would like to thank the State of California for providing the funding for this program. The Volunteers that help with our grooming efforts make this all possible. Thanks to Wes Daily, Delbert Milligan and Don Forrester for their dedicated service and their skill in operating our grooming equipment. General Information Lassen National Forest snowmobile routes are closed to all wheeled vehicles including All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) until March 31, 2008 (Forest Order No. 06-07-07). The best time to get out on the snow is around noon. The mornings are icy, at noon the snow warms, the temperatures are in the 50’s and the conditions are favorable for both the rider and the machine. On the Eagle Lake District most routes have been groomed with the exception of the long loop on the Fredonyer System, and the trail to Antelope Mountain. One of the grooming machines has equipment failure and has been down since Thursday, February 28. Snowshoe/Ski Moonlight Hike- Please join us for the last snowshoe hike of the season. Meet at Goumaz/Hog Flat at 8:00 p.m. Call the Eagle Lake District office if you need to reserve a pair of shoes. Hat Creek Ranger District Information On Saturday, March 1, a small amount of new snow and temperatures in the upper 20’s allowed grooming 45 miles of the Ashpan system, with 90% open (A-1 through A-10). The Latour system was groomed on Tuesday, March 4, when temperatures ranged from the mid-20’s to mid-30’s. These trails (including L-1 through L-2) are 75% open, with 40 miles groomed. Warmer temperatures have melted snow at lower elevations, with 1-2 feet remaining at the staging area. The upper portions of the system at Battlecreek and Latour are still holding 8-12 feet. New precipitation is possible over the next several days. Safety Advisories: 1) Two weeks ago, our groomer operator reported that an avalanche had occurred on Jack’s Backbone. Because current snow conditions on the slope have not been assessed, riders are advised to exercise caution in this area. 2) Discussions with telecommunications providers have resulted in cell phone signals being restored throughout the Ashpan helicopter medivac system. Communications should again be functioning at all 15. The phone calls myself and the Forest Service made to the communication company concerning the recent loss of cell phone service must have done some good as service is back to normal at the locations I was in tonight with Medivac sites functioning normally as far as cell service goes!!!!! Hopefully the up coming weather systems will bring fresh snow to Ashpan and Latour, Ashpan staging area holds 1-3' with Latour/Battlecreek holding 8-12'. Their is still great spring riding so come enjoy the Sun and Snow while it lasts, as always be cautious , watch for others, be aware of hazards as they occur without warning and enjoy the ride.. Pear Lake Loop, Tamarack and the route up to Turner Mountain were groomed February 14. Skiers: The McGowan Cross Country Ski area is groomed and ready for riding this weekend. This trail was groomed on Thursday February 28. Eagle Lake Ranger District Information On the Eagle Lake District grooming has been accomplished on all of the routes with the exception of the Mud Creek Rim, and the trail to Crater Lake. Temperatures have been in the 50’s, and the groomers have described the snow conditions to be similar to “mashed potatoes”. Due to the weight of the grooming equipment, we have to get out on the snow early and be off the snow by noon is order to groom a decent trail. Skiers: The Bizz Johnson Trail was groomed on Tuesday February 26th, from Goumaz to the first tunnel in the lower canyon. Hat Creek Ranger District Information Grooming resumed last weekend under heavy snow conditions that persisted from Friday, February 22 through Sunday, February 24. Accumulations of new snowfall range from 18 inches at the staging area to 36 inches in the Battlecreek/Latour area. The lower system and upper systems were groomed 2-3 times during this period, including completion of the ”Outer Sandow” loop for the first time in four years. As of Sunday evening, the Ashpan system was 100% open (A-1 through A-10) with 55 miles groomed, and Latour was 80% open (L-1 to L-2, and most of the loops), with 40 miles groomed. Safety Advisories: 1) Our groomer operator reported that a large avalanche occurred on Jack’s Backbone sometime Saturday night. It began part way up the southwest side, and carried 12-14 inch diameter trees nearly on quarter mile down the slope. The steeper portion of this slope appears to hold windloaded snow on an unstable base, and riders are advised to avoid this area until the snowpack stabilizes. 2) We have just learned that, due to a telecommunications company work on the Table Mt. cell phone towers, signals that are usually reliable throughout our groomed system may not be functioning. Of 15 helicopter medivac sites, only three appear to be receiving a signal. Although the Forest Service is working to address the situation, please be aware that emergency communications are limited at this time. General Information Lassen National Forest snowmobile routes are closed to all wheeled vehicles including All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) until March 31, 2008 (Forest Order No. 06-07-07). January 31, 2008 Correction on my last grooming report. Sugarloaf route number is 67 not 63. Truman Duncan and myself drove to the groomer without incident. Temp at starting time was 30 degrees. Temp ranged from 30 to 45 back to 32 and at shutdown 40 degrees. There was about 3/4" on new snow on the groomer. There is a snowmobile trailer in the Sugarloaf Trailhead that has been there for at least 2 weeks and needs to be removed. I pushed the snow berms off the parking lot. There had been no snowmobile activity on the route since we had groomed on Tuesday. Truman installed a road number (24S15) and route marker (51) at Portuguese Pass. More markers will be installed later but the mattracks has signing for the Pondo area since that was the original planned destination. We traveled 45.2 miles. Most of the routes required track packing and dozer work before tilling could be done. The Sugarloaf route 67 was tilled twice. Since there is an forecasted storm coming in on Sunday and no diesel for refueling, I brought the groomer back to the Fir Camp road about 2 miles above the Sugarloaf trailhead until we can refuel. The Western Divide route 51 was fully groomed from Portuguese Pass to Dunlap Saddle. At present the Western Divide route 51 is fully groomed from Greenhorn Summit Trailhead at State Hwy 155 to Dunlap Saddle for an approximate distance of 14 miles. Tyler Mdw and Dry Meadow area has a lot of brush and small trees still exposed. The Tobias Peak Loop route 61 is fully groomed. This route had been track packed and partially tilled two weeks ago but the powdery snow and high winds had drifted in the road so cutting new road way was required. Tobias Lookout route 62 is fully groomed. This route had been fully groomed 2 weeks ago but with high winds and powdery snow, drifting was present and new road cutting was required. Frog Meadow route 64 is fully groomed. About 3' of snow in the campground. Good news, diesel has been delivered to the Hot Springs Station. I'll wait and see what this forecasted storm brings us on Sunday before I make any definite plans. Nolan H. JANUARY 29, 2008 Truman Duncan and myself went to the Sugarloaf Trailhead to groom. We drove the Mattracks from the Hot Springs station to Sugarloaf by FS road 23S05. The wind storm on Sat and Sun had knocked down several dead snags in the White River Summer Home tract and we had to cut our way through. Fortunately none of the cabins had been hit. The Sugarloaf Trailhead had about 8" of new snow with an overall depth of 10-12". We left Sugarloaf Trailhead at 1330 hrs and track packed and cut drifts on the 63 route from Sugarloaf to Portuguese Pass. Snow Depth at Portuguese Pass is about 4'. Along the way we were passed by 2 snowmobilers coming off the mountain and one was Tim Mert the Volunteer Groomer Operator Trainee for the south end. At Portuguese Pass we headed south on the 51 route to Greenhorn Summit Trailhead. We arrived at Greenhorn Summit about 1800 hrs. Overall snow depth at Greenhorn Summit is about 12". There were a couple of spots where I did some "farming" with the blade a couple of miles out of Greenhorn Summit. We bucked and removed one 36" tree from the road at the Kern County line. It had fallen in an earlier storm and there were several 12-15' sections of tree buried in the snow. At Greenhorn Summit we turned around and used the blade and tiller all the way back to the Sugarloaf Trailhead arriving there at 2130 hrs. The 51 route is fully groomed for 6 miles and the 63 route is fully groomed for it's entire length of 4 miles. Hot Springs station is out of diesel fuel in it's tanks and there is no local vendors for which to purchase fuel. The fuel contractor could not give a delivery date so we will make one more trip on 1-31-2008 to groom the Tobias Peak and Frog Meadow area. After that we will be out of fuel until the contractor fills the tank. Nolan H. The same beautiful mountain views and peaceful meadows that are great to explore in the summer, offer a wide variety of winter activities…sure to cure any cabin fever. You are invited to experience our superb groomed trail system. These cold winter temperatures make for excellent conditions. Our nicely groomed trails keep getting an additional powdering of fresh fluffy snow which makes for fabulous riding. On Eagle Lake, there are a couple of areas that are plowed for timber sale activity. From Bogard staging area east, the trail is groomed to Crater Lake. From Bogard, to the west, the McKenzie Timber Sale has plowed a portion of our trail but creatively we have found a groomed route around this area. The Goumaz Road from Hog Flat Reservoir to the 101 road is plowed for the Hog/44 Timber Sale. We have made some approach ramps for snowmobile users. Please use extreme caution around these timber sale areas. Hat Creek Trails- As of 1-22-08 95% of Ashpan/Battle Creek is groomed and open (50 miles), we received two inches of new overnight. As of 1-21 Ashpan received 24-28" @ the staging area from 1130 pm last night to 430 pm today !!!! Bring your Longtracks, shovels and snorkels not necessarily in that order!! The upper system also received another 18" for a total of 6-9', most of tonight was spent track packing the 16 road out to 4 miles and then grooming, Latour was groomed only to the Jacks Backbone turnoff, as it took a lot of time just to get the main 16 road done , snow was running over the tracks on the tractor from the staging area out 4 miles, the lower system received more snow than most of the upper system overnight!! Please be cautious around ditch lines as they appear full but have NO bottom, many of the caution poles are buried, I have reset as many as possible tonight with more to be reset tomorrow pm. The remaining parts of Latour and Ashpan/Battlecreek will hopefully be done by Friday as the going is very very slow !! Kaasbohrer will be over Wednesday to address and repair an oil leak on the tractor and should be done with the repair the same day causing No down time ( I hope) As always ride safely, be aware of others and come enjoy the conditions as they are nothing short of EPIC for our area!!!! Til tomorrow pm...... Wes

Information

Well after some very deep powder Ashpan turned to the Ice bowl last week, trails were boiler plate ice, grooming was not done last week as the rock hard conditions made the trails nearly impossible to groom correctly!!1-20-2008, Ashpan received 8" at the staging area and 12-18" in the upper system it was snowing heavily all day and as of this report still snowing!! Trails groomed 1-20... 16 road to Jacks Backbone, to Latour F/S via huckelberry road, Flattop , Latour lower loop to Huckelberry,Cutter road back to 16, 16 to Dogsled, Red mountain loop, Dogsled Cutter, back 16 road, 55 miles of trails are freshly groomed as of tonight, Battle creek/Gray back to be done 1-21-22-23 as these roads will take time to reopen and get upto standards due to last weeks rain and ice!! More reports in the next few nights!!! As always ride safe, watch culvert crossings and watch for trees as they are again heavily loaded and may break and become a hazard, ride responsibly and enjoy the trails and new powder!!! Thanks Wes

Jonesville Please refer to www.hillsliders.com The snow trails groomed up beautiful this week. Behind our snow grooming tiller, a smooth corduroy blanket trailed. Remember that single digit temperatures make for some icy conditions. Keep your speeds down and always ride in control. A reminder: wheeled vehicles, such as 4-wheel drives and all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) are restricted from all groomed trails. The reason for this act is to protect public safety. The ruts from wheeled vehicle damage the groomed surface and create a safety hazard for snowmobiles. Your intersection signs are in place on the Morgan, Swain and Fredonyer Trail Systems. Please, if you are out riding and notice a sign leaning over, help us maintain our trails by straightening these intersection markers. We appreciate your efforts. We have a couple glitches in our system. The Summit Timber Sale is active in and around Antelope Mountain. We are grooming on Friday 1/18/2008 and will do our best to make it possible for you to access Antelope Mountain and the snow play areas in the Antelope vicinity. The Goumaz Road from Hog Flat Reservoir to the 101 road is plowed for the Hog/44 Timber Sale. We have made some approach ramps for snowmobile users and have asked to leave an access lane for OSV travel. Please use extreme caution around these timber sale areas. Recently there has been three vehicles broken into that were parked at Goumaz/Hog Flat and Miller Crossing along the Bizz Johnson Trail. Please take you valuables with you until we catch thieves. Snow is falling, calling you to come out and PLAY…Enjoy a NICE ride, share the snow with others and respect wildlife. BE SAFE
